8th & I Neighbors - Neighbor's

Ten years ago, a group of neighbors banded together to renovate two dilapidated
lots in their neighborhood and turn it into a community park. 8th & I
neighbors were awarded $11,000 for a playground structure meant for children
ages 2-6, where no suitable structure existed.
Cherry Street Association
$15,000
Cherry Street Association partnered with Coyote Jr. High, an afterschool
- summer youth program, to install a public art project in a highly visible
site on Cherry Street in the Central Area. Youth weigh in on the process
and offer their insights of what community means to them while they acquire
new skills in art and learn teamwork.
Colman Neighbor's Block Watch
$7,000
Colman Neighbor's Block Watch was awarded a grant to conduct a two-day
tree planting party that will beautify a criminal hot-spot along the Dearborn
corridor between 23rd and 28th street. The project involves youth outreach
in order to break down barriers between youth and the community.
Hilltop Action Coalition
$15,200
This coalition of community councils in the Hilltop area have been instrumental
in initiating and implementing numerous community grants that deter crime
and motivate neighbors to help each other. Funds from the SNAP program
provides for a tool lending library, safety equipment, neighborhood repairs
as well as youth stipends designed to reach out to young members of the
community.
Rainier Othello Safety Association
(ROSA)
$5,000
ROSA is a newly formed group of neighbors who are mobilizing in order
to combat the crime in their community. Rainier and Othello is a crime
hotspot with drug activity running rampant on Rainier Avenue and spilling
onto residential streets. They've received a grant to develop a plan that
will improve pedestrian safety on their streets.
Westwood Neighborhood Council -
Juvenile Justice Roundtable
Delridge - SW Seattle, WA
$1,000
Westwood Neighborhood Council partnered with Seattle Police Department
to host a roundtable discussion between youth and police. The event provides
youth with a better understanding of the justice system as well as a forum
for both sides to have a dialogue and break down communication barriers.
Highland Park Action Committee
$10,000
Highland Park Action Committee partnered with the White Center Community
Development Association to create a safer downtown area. The project addresses
issues of blight, safety and diversity. SNAP funds will transform storefronts
and public places, paint out graffiti, encourage volunteerism and reach
out to minority community members.
