Sample Projects For
Community Building Grants & Strong Neighborhood Action Program


The ideas presented here are examples of past SNAP projects and are intended

Crime and Safety:

  • Help create neighborhood Block Watch and SDART (Seattle Disaster Aid Response Team) programs.
  • Purchase smoke alarms (and batteries) and other safety devices and distribute to residents.
  • Implement CPTED designs (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). i.e. add security lighting to dark areas of the neighborhood.
  • Help set up a revolving loan program to improve wiring and increase home security (alarms, deadbolts, etc.)
  • Implement traffic calming devices, i.e. chicanes, traffic circles, crosswalks, etc.

Community Building Activities:

  • Plan and implement a yard and neighborhood cleanup, supply trash hauling and debris removal.
  • Provide funds for a "Paint-Out Day" where neighbors can paint homes and paint out graffiti.
  • Develop and implement a homeowner education program including financial planning, home improvement, insurance workshops, etc.
  • Develop and implement neighborhood recreational programs such as a basketball tournament; or after school and/or evening programs.
  • Partner with other community organizations to implement a project of shared interest, thereby building community relationships and cooperation.

Neighborhood Improvement:

  • Purchase and install protective coating film for windows, removing metal bars in shop windows to foster a feeling of safety among pedestrians and shoppers.
  • Create a tool bank for minor home improvement projects and make it accessible to neighbors.
  • Provide funding for neighborhood pride projects: neighborhood identification signs, tree planting and trimming projects, add benches and trash cans, park and playground improvements.
  • Minor home repair project funding.
  • Use funds to supplement other grants or provide matching dollars for specific improvements.
  • Develop and implement street designs to encourage pedestrian activity.
