Anatomy of a Speech
Creating
an outline
Introduction
- Greeting -- Greet the audience with a smile and make eye contact
with one person. Avoid telling any joke (ever) that includes a
victim. Someone in your audience may take offense. Start your
message in 25 words or less. (Don't say your name yet.)
- Question -- Ask a direct or framed question.
- Promise -- Preview the topic(s). Then, promise the benefits
and rewards
- Name -- Announce who you are.
- Credentials -- Convey your professional and personal qualifications
Body of Presentation
- Explain -- What, how, why? Give your reasons, causes and purposes
for your topic(s).
- Persuade -- Use phrases and words like: "so that",
"do this", "instead of" and "because"
to influence your audience to do what you're asking.
Conclusion
- Signal the end of your presentation and summarize your key points.
- Invite, encourage and challenge a response.
- Conclude on a note of upbeat hope
- Welcome questions and comments
